Robert Steele paints pictures in which he uses man made subjects set in nature to evoke the history and spirit of particular places. Steele often paints in Northern California where such subjects trace the epic settling of the West. As they express the rhythm, tension, and the striving of humanity, they can seem brave. But Steele shows their delicacy, which suggests the evanescence of man.
Robert Steele enjoys, above all, painting on location. Originally an architect, he has studied art in Austria, New York, and San Francisco. His paintings are part of collections in Europe, Japan, and America. He has received many commissions for books, museums, and for the theater. He often contributes his artistic talents to historic preservation efforts as well as to local musical theater. He, his wife Alice (portrait at left), and family live near San Francisco.
